COLLE DI VAL D'ELSA

Visiting Colle di Val d'Elsa is a good day trip from Siena, and is only 16 kilometres from San Gimignano. The town is renowned for its glass production which accounts for 15% of the world's crystal glass.

The city has two parts, the old historical centre on the top of the hill and the newer area below. There is ample parking near the entrance to the old historical part.

Enter the ancient city through the monumental Porta Nova, which winds a long and narrow way through a sequence of fine 16th and 17th century noble houses and churches. Colle di Val d'Elsa is an easy city to stroll around with shops and galleries, and ancient stairs that will take you many surprising locations. Market Day is held on the first Sunday of each month, offering a large range of goods to purchase.
