Newtown to Dulwich Hill
This is a leisurely seven kilometre walk through four inner city suburbs.
Catch a train to Newtown. After exiting the station cross over to the far side of the intersection of King Street and Enmore Road, turning to your left. You will walk past many hair salons, restaurants for every taste, the Enmore Theatre, diverse small businesses and the wonderful Cow and Moon gelataria. Turn right into Stanmore Road, then right into Liberty Street. A left at Harrow Road takes you into Stanmore, and on the way you pass many great homes and terraces for which this suburb is well-known.
Harrow Road intersects with Trafalgar Street, so go left and proceed to Stanmore Station. Proceed up Holt Street to your left, passing the public school, and walk over the bridge at Stanmore Road. Immediately walk past Newington College, and turn left at College Lane. Go right at Newington Road, zigzagging left at Bright Street, left at Addison Road, right at Essex Street, left at Surrey Street and finally a right at Amy Street takes you to Henson Park. This used to be the home ground for the inner city Rugby League team, the Newtown Jets. Exit by the gates behind the grandstand past some great examples of Marrickville's suburbia on Centennial Street. Continue along Centennial, veering left at Petersham Road.
When you arrive at the intersection with Marrickville Road, the Town Hall building is on your right. On the forecourt is the statue 'Winged Victory' , the Marrickville Soldiers' Memorial commemorating the 458 local soldiers who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. Head right to the traffic lights, turning left into Livingstone Road. On the corner is the impressive St Brigid Catholic Church. Further along Livingstone Road is the equally impressive St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Continue to Albermarle Street then turn right. Near the train line, enter the pathway to the left which follows the railway to Dulwich Hill Station. From here you can catch a train or the light rail to any destination in the city.
