SAN GIMIGNANO
San Gimignano sits atop a hill overlooking the Tuscan countryside. It is encircled by 13th-century walls, with the old town centred on Piazza della Cisterna, a triangular square lined with houses. The skyline in dominated by 14 medieval towers, with the Torre Gross in the Piazza del Duomo being the tallest at 177ft or 54m.
San Gimignano is a easy 50 minute drive from Siena, with ample parking on the outskirts of the town. It is a wonderful place to stroll through and is a very popular tourist destination. There is a variety of shops selling clothing, jewellery, kitchen supplies and beautiful artworks. Every Thursday market day is held in the main squares of the city centre, from 8am to 1.30pm, The town has many trattorias and cafes to suit all tastes, as well as the some of the best gelato in Italy.
